Family Mosaic has over 25,000 properties and is adding more per year.

These have a large environmental impact, through their use of energy and water, the materials they’re made from, and the resources used by our residents. We have an Environmental Sustainability Strategy which sets out the issues we think are most important, and where we can make a meaningful difference.

The strategy covers the following issues:

  • Fuel poverty – we know that some of our residents struggle to heat and power their homes affordably. We have already improved the loft and cavity wall insulation of over 7000 properties through our Affordable Warmth programme. In the next few years, we will be looking at how we can improve the energy efficiency of another 6000 properties. Our manifesto outlines our commitment to promoting the health, wealth and wellbeing of our residents through housing.
  • Climate change – we are already starting to see the effects of climate change in the natural world. Across the globe, temperatures are rising, rainfall patterns are changing and wildlife is trying to adapt to altered seasons. In England, we are starting to see hotter summers, more sudden, torrential downpours and milder winters. Some of the effects of climate change can be considered good: milder winters reduce the need for heating. However hotter summers increase the risk of over-heating, and sudden downpours increase the risk of flash flooding.
  • Recycling – we have started working in partnership with local authorities in London to improve estates-based recycling facilities, starting with Haringey. Our aim is to ensure at least 50% of estate bins are for recycling, and residents have the information they need to use them properly.
  • Renewable energy – Family Mosaic has already installed solar photovoltaic and solar thermal panels on almost 400 individual properties. In turn, these panels produce electricity and hot water using daily sunlight. We install solar photovoltaic panels on our new build developments. In total we generate about 1.3MW of electricity which is used to power communal services on estates, with spare capacity sold to the national grid.
