Apprenticeships are a wide range of training opportunities providing a way for you to achieve a recognised NVQ qualification, develop practical skills and gain valuable experience in a professional work environment, earning a wage while you learn.

Eligibility criteria

In order to become an apprentice, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • be a Family Mosaic customer or an unemployed resident who lives in a London Borough
  • be eligible to work in the UK
  • be 16 years of age or over
  • not be in further education
  • not be qualified to a Level 4 or above higher qualification (Level 4 is equivalent to HNC/HND Standard)
  • be available to undertake a full-time apprenticeship programme for a minimum of 12 months
  • be willing to actively engage with us

We regularly offer apprenticeships in the following vocational areas:
Job roles: Bricklayer

Bricklayers build and repair walls, chimney stacks, tunnel linings and decorative stonework. They might also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects. Much of the work is carried out on building sites outside, in all weathers, as well as in noisy, dusty, dirty or wet areas. A lot of building work takes place at high levels so you need to be able to climb ladders and work from scaffolding. The work involves a lot of standing, kneeling and movement, often using heavy tools or carrying loads of bricks and mortar.

Duties

An Apprentice Bricklayer will develop their construction skills and gain valuable experience of a variety of routine brickwork-related activities. Duties could include many areas of brickwork such as cavity walls, arches, piers, concreting and setting out solid walls.

Skills

You will possess good practical and creative skills with the ability to work alone or as part of a team. You will also be able to work carefully and pay attention to detail.

Salary

Job roles: Administration Officer, Administration Assistant, Receptionist, Business Support Officer, Sales & Marketing Officer, Secretary, Personal Assistant, Office Manager, HR Assistant

Business Administration covers many different occupations that keep businesses running efficiently and profitably, and keep staff and customers happy. These roles involve carrying out clerical duties and handling the day-to-day tasks in an office that ensure things run smoothly.

Duties

As an apprentice duties will vary from dealing with post, answering telephone enquiries, responding to emails, updating computer systems, organising meetings, minute taking, typing documents, ordering stationary and using office equipment. Reception cover may also be included within the role.

Skills

You will be organised, have good communication skills and enjoy working in a team. Strong computer skills, attention to detail, a good level of grammar and ability to work on own initiative are requirements for this type of position.

Salary

From £12,000 to £18,000

Job roles: Carpenter

Carpenters and joiners make and install wooden fixtures and fittings. They can work in many areas, for instance on construction sites, fitting out shops and bars, and building sets for film and TV.

Duties

As an apprentice duties will vary from installing door/window frames, floor joist coverings, partitions, cladding, stair components, repairing or replacing doors, windows, mouldings, frames. You will use a range of hand and power tools.

Skills

You should enjoy working with wood, possess good practical skills, have attention to detail, the ability to follow instructions and technical plans and have good maths skills for working out measurements.

Level 2 (Intermediate), Level 3 (Advanced)

Salary

From £10,000 to £16,000

Job roles: Childcare Assistant, Nursery Nurse, Childminder, Foster Carer, Care Worker, Youth Support Worker, Pre-School Assistant, After-School Activities Coordinator, Teaching Assistant

Childcare can involve working with three distinct groups: babies and toddlers, children under 5, and then kids up to 15 years old. You will learn about different services and roles within childcare and play a key role in child development and safeguarding.

Duties

As an apprentice your duties will vary but include supervising children, child development through play and reading activities, supervising sleep and meal times, monitoring children’s progress and sharing information about their development with their parents and/or carers.

Skills

You will need to be committed to helping children thrive and get the best start in life, have a warm and positive approach, lots of creative ideas and a willingness to work as part of a team.

Job roles: Customer Service Officer, Customer Relations Officer, Receptionist, Contact Centre Officer, Complaints Officer, Retail Supervisor/Team Leader, Hospitality Services Assistant

Customer service is the service provided to customers before, during and after purchasing and using goods and services. Good customer service provides an experience that meets customer expectations and is the key success of any business.

Duties

Apprentices tasks will vary depending on the role, but often include being the first point of contact, dealing with customer enquiries and complaints face to face, over the phone or by email. Providing advice and arranging services for customers, entering information onto a computer database and taking payment for goods or services.

Skills

You will be a confident communicator with good people skills, carry a friendly can do approach and have a positive approach to learning about company services and products. Computer skills would be desirable.

Salary

Job roles: Social Media Assistant, Digital Marketing Assistant, Online Marketing Assistant, Marketing Executive, SEO assistant, Website Content Manager

Digital marketing and the use of social and digital media is a key part of the marketing strategy for most businesses today. Digital marketing uses online advertising and all forms of social media to promote products and services to potential customers. This can be via any Internet-connected devices, including smart phones and game consoles.

Duties

As an apprentice your tasks will include promoting products, services or ideas across websites, apps and social media online. Managing online communities, setting up and running marketing campaigns, writing articles and creating websites, or managing blogs.

Skills

You will be a confident and creative individual with a passion for working with digital technology. Your IT skills will be strong and you will be familiar with using social media platforms. Communication, budgeting and planning are also key skills to ensure your advertising campaigns are successful.

Job roles: Electrician, Electrical Service Engineer

Electricians specialise in fitting and repairing electrical circuits and wiring in people’s homes and businesses. They also install and maintain electrical equipment, instruments and machinery from TVs and domestic appliances to aerial systems in blocks of flats.

Duties

As an apprentice you will carry out domestic electrical installations, repairs and rewires in customers’ homes as well as diagnosing issues and defects and taking corrective action.

Skills

You will enjoy hands on work and have a keen interest in technology plus good analytical and practical skills. Additionally you will be good at problem solving, be friendly and approachable. Good colour vision is essential because a lot of the work involves identifying cables and components by colour.

Job roles: Junior Stylist, Stylist, Hairdresser, Barber

Hair stylists use a range of techniques to provide clients with the desired colour, texture and shape that they want for their hair. A hair stylist may also work in specialist areas, such as styling afro-Caribbean hair or wig fitting. They are highly skilled in their ability to handle hair, and have extensive knowledge of the appropriate products for different hair types.

Duties

Hairdressing: Booking appointments, shampooing, conditioning, drying and styling hair, mixing and applying hair colouring, promoting products, perming and relaxing different types of hair.
Barbering: Providing client consultations, cutting hair, trimming & shaping facial hair, shampoo and condition hair & scalp, colouring and cutting basic patterns in hair.

Skills

In these professions you’ll be on your feet and working to please all sorts of customers, so a friendly nature, strong communication skills and good sense of humour are essential. Your own appearance is also important, since customers want to know that creating a good impression matters to you.

Job roles: Support Worker, Case Worker, Mental Health Outreach Worker, Community Support Worker, Care Assistant

Social care is about helping people with a particular need, such as the disabled, the elderly or people with learning disabilities in their home or community. Care can include anything from helping people get dressed to transporting them to and from a residential home or taking them shopping.

Duties

Apprentices duties will vary depending on role but is likely to involve assessing and reviewing individual client cases, building trusting relationships with service users and their families, responding to support requests, providing information and signposting individuals to support services, organising and managing support plans, keeping records updated and writing reports.

Skills

You’ll need tact, patience and understanding. The ability to assess and cope with situations in a sensitive and non-judgmental way will help you work with people. Communication, organisational and time management skills are key in planning and organising your workload as are interpersonal skills to relate and support people of all ages and backgrounds.

Job roles: IT Helpdesk Support, Junior Network Support, ICT Technician, Systems Administrator, Software Developer, Web Developer, Programmer, Security Engineer, Security Operations Analyst

IT is a large sector that is split into specialised areas that include IT Support & Networking and Web & Software Development. IT professionals maintain computer systems and networks, develop software or websites, help companies set up and implement new systems, and train people to use IT facilities.

Duties

An IT apprentice duties will depend on the specialist area they are working in. Most will include software installation, communication skills and technical fault diagnosis. Apprentices work towards an IT qualification from a recognised group such as Microsoft or CompTIA.

Skills

You will need excellent IT skills and a passion for technology; be creative and analytical, with good problem solving skills. Be an effective communicator when dealing with employees/customers technical issues, carrying a positive attitude and a desire to help others.

Job roles: Painter & Decorator, Improver

Painters and decorators use a range of coverings to enhance and protect surfaces. These surfaces could include plaster, metal and wood. Work can be on a building site, commercial and residential properties and will often include working from heights

Duties

As an apprentice your tasks will vary between taking measurements, stripping wallpaper or paint, filling holes and cracks and rubbing down to ensure surfaces are level, preparing surfaces with primer and undercoat, mixing paint to the right shade, applying layers of paint and hanging wallpaper.

Skills

You should have good practical and creative skills. You will need to be able to work carefully and pay attention to detail as well as having a good head for heights.

Job roles: Plumber, Heating Engineer, Heating & Ventilation Engineer

Plumbing is vital to public health, plumbers help to make sure we have clean drinking water, sanitation and heating. They don’t only deal with what’s totally necessary, they also make sure we have the simple luxuries in life, like hot baths and central heating. Without plumbers disease would be rife, there would be little sanitation and clean, fresh drinking water from a tap wouldn’t even exist.

Duties

As an apprentice your duties will include carrying out plumbing/heating repairs, diagnosing faults, replacing defective parts, re-instating disconnected systems and scheduled servicing of heating/plumbing systems.

Skills

You will need to possess good manual skills, enjoy physically demanding work and have great customer service skills. You also need to have full colour vision and be able to work under pressure and authority.

Job roles: Site Manager, Assistant Site Manager, Trainee Assistant Site Manager

The Site Manager is the person in charge of a construction site. They are responsible for supervising operations on site to ensure that they are completed safely, to programme and within budget.

Duties

Trainee Site Managers are responsible for coordinating trades, directing labour and materials to meet the production programme; working with the Sales Team to ensure that regular meetings are attended and all procedures are adhered to; deputising for the Site Manager; ensuring that the onsite construction team is fully resourced and well directed, providing full support in achieving targets/deadlines; ensuring high standards of customer satisfaction and health and safety on site.

Skills

You will have construction experience onsite as a foreman/within a trade or be a recent construction management graduate. Possess strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to communicate, build rapports and negotiate whilst influencing others assertively. You will be a problem solver able to remain calm under pressure, whilst maintaining the very highest of standards.

What happens after I submit my application?
Once we have assessed your application and you’ve been accepted, we will contact you to organise an appointment with one of our Apprenticeship Officers to discuss your application in more detail, and prepare you for your interview.

If your application is unsuccessful, we will contact you to provide feedback and offer an appointment with an Employment Coach. Your coach will provide you with employment advice, coaching and support to help you secure an alternative apprenticeship with Family Mosaic, one of our contractors or one of our partner organisations.

What can I expect once I start as an apprentice?
Your manager will support you to settle into your role and will create a training and development plan for you. You will have regular supervisory meetings from the start of your apprenticeship to track your progress and provide the necessary support throughout your apprenticeship experience.

Our apprenticeship team will support you by organising training and reviewing your progress regularly with you and your manager throughout the course of your apprenticeship.

How much can I expect to earn?
The national minimum wage for Apprenticeships is £3.30 per hour. However, we try our very best to support our customers into apprenticeships which pay at least the national minim wage which is £6.70 per hour.
