Solomon
Solomon registered with pathways2work in June 2010 after being out of work for nearly a year. He had worked in retail in the past but had to leave due to a back problem and wanted to change direction and find employment in the area of Youth Work.
He came to work on a voluntary basis in the Pathways2work team in August when a voluntary post became vacant where his duties included liaising with clients on the telephone, researching organisations in London that may be useful to Pathways2work clients and updating various databases. He also did some temporary/casual work in several other organisations.
In October 2010 a vacancy was sourced with a company called Southways and Solomon liaised with his Pathways2work adviser in order to complete the application form for the role, particularly the Personal Statement. Although Solomon did not have a lot of direct experience of working with young people, he had done so on an unofficial basis with friends and family so with his adviser’s guidance he was able to demonstrate on the form that he had a wealth of transferable skills relevant to the Personal Specification for the job. Solomon and his adviser worked on the form in detail before submitting it to the company.
A few days later Solomon was called for interview and found out the next day that he had been successful in securing the post of Youth Worker. His adviser also provided one of the references required by the company before he could take up the job offer. He has been working there since January 2011 and he is thoroughly enjoying his new role working with adolescents and young adults, and the feedback from the company has been very positive.
Laura
Laura, one of our residents, registered with pathways2work on 15 September, she was encouraged to register with us by her Neighbourhood Manager. When we registered Laura it was apparent that she had excellent administrative skills, she had been unemployed for a year and was finding that quite difficult as she had never experienced a gap in her employment before.
Firstly, we organised a work placement for her within P2W, where she was a great help and then a temporary role came up in Asset Management, Laura was short-listed and has been successful in securing the role, she started late last year and is continuing to enjoy the role.
Linda
Linda, a Hackney tenant of Family Mosaic had been out of work for 6 months when she first came to athways2work. She is highly skilled with a background in IT, but had found that the current economic climate had made it increasingly difficult to secure a position where she felt she could use her skills. This had a significant impact on her confidence and when she first met her Employment Liaison Officer (ELO) it was agreed that this was the first thing that needed to be addressed.
One of our partner organisations employed a Life Coach who worked with people in Linda’s situation and so her ELO arranged for her to have a confidence building session. Linda then worked with her ELO to improve her CV and work on her action plan to find work. Her ELO also arranged for her to have a job broker due to her specialist job requirements.
Linda soon found voluntary work where she was able to use her IT skills whilst she continued to systematically apply for jobs. Soon she was invited for an interview for an IT support position and whilst she was not successful, the feedback she received made her realise that her job was just around the corner which boosted her confidence. Linda has now secured a job working on an IT helpdesk and is determined to continue to progress in her field.
‘I would like to say that I found the service provided very useful and uplifting. The work my ELO provide with my CV was invaluable and gave me the confidence to step out. I believe I was met at my point of need. The service was very professional and the cross working between agency's was extremely beneficial a big thank you to all who participated’ -
