Repaying your debts

Repaying priority debts

You should always pay priority debts first.  If you cannot afford to clear the debt in one go, you should arrange to pay this in instalments based on the current payment plus a sum for the arrears.  For example, if you have rent arrears you may be able to pay your current rent plus an agreed amount each week to clear your arrears.

Regular payment is key and you should stay in contact with your creditors, especially if your financial circumstances change.

Repaying non-priority (credit) debts

These are not quite as serious as priority debts and you may have little or no spare income with which to repay them.  Even if this is the case you should contact all your unsecured creditors: explain your difficulties and include a copy of your budget.  Again, you should stay in contact with them and let them know if your situation changes.
