Right to Buy and Right to Acquire

These two schemes are available to Family Mosaic tenants who are managed by Charlton Triangle or Old Oak Housing.

Right to Buy was introduced by the government in 1980 to allow public sector landlords to offer properties for sale to tenants with the benefit of a discount. The discount depends on the number of years you have lived in your home.

Right to Acquire was introduced by the government in 1997.

As well as occupying a qualifying property you must:

  • Have spent 2 full years as a public sector tenant if you became a tenant before 18th January 2005.
  • Have spent 5 full years as a public sector tenant if you became a tenant on or after 18th January 2005
  • If your home is a self contained property and is your only or main home.

Not all properties are for sale and not all tenants have the Right to Buy or Right to Acquire. The rules were set down by the government and Family Mosaic has to ensure each application meets the qualifying criteria

The general guidelines:

  • If you were a tenant of a local authority and your property was transferred to Family Mosaic via a stock transfer and you hold a protected assured tenancy you will have the right to buy your home.
  • If you hold a secured tenancy (normally commenced before 1989) and your landlord was not originally Family Mosaic or a charitable housing trust.
  • If your property was built using Social Housing Grant after 1st April 1997.
  • If your property was transferred from a Local Authority after 1st April 1997
