UPDATE - Spring 2011

At time of writing, the Easter holidays are just around the corner.  This year, not only will families be getting together but so will the candidates to join Family Mosaic’s tenant scrutiny panel.  Soon after the break, interviews will start and there will be quite a few of them.

There are enough candidates to fill the available places more than four times over - but only twelve people can join the panel.  Instead of disappointing so many people, it makes more sense to include them and spread the large number of inspection activities and other research that needs to be carried out.  This will also spread valuable training, knowledge and experience across a wider number of residents.  So in future we will always have suitable and motivated people, able to keep an eye on services and confident in how to get our needs across.

These Scrutiny Panel Associates will form up into support teams, utilising their skills, experience and first-rate training.  They will also be the pool of talent to draw on should a Panel Member have to withdraw for any reason.  It’s a much bigger logistical exercise than planned and we will be asking a lot from the partners we are bringing in to supply the training, both in terms of quality and value for money.  Membership will be reviewed this Autumn, to see if any new candidates can join up.  Watch this space for updates.

This is the first year of the Scrutiny Panel and it may take a little while to find the ideal set-up.  That means taking time to make sure each stage is working as well as it can before progressing to the next one.  One thing that will not change however, is the Panel’s main task of driving forward improvements.  The wait will be worth it.

If you wish to apply to join the Scrutiny Panel at the next intake, please email your name and address details to tenant.scrutiny@familymosaic.co.uk

Winter 2011

Because involving customers in their landlord’s regulation (called “co-regulation”) is such a new thing, many people are curious about exactly what scrutiny is and how it will work in practice. If you join the Scrutiny Panel, you will play a part in answering those questions.

The term “scrutiny” incorporates a range of activities from estate inspections and mystery shopping up to interviewing staff and tenants.

Some members of the Panel will do the hands-on work, while others guide and manage the investigations. The Panel will investigate each area one by one: repairs; complaints; lettings and so on. At the end of each investigation, they will produce a report, agreeing an action plan with the Family Mosaic Board to deliver improvements in that service.

The Panel will be supported by staff but only tenants, leaseholders or other customers may join and vote on Panel activities.

Do you think this is for you?

If so, you’ll be supported every step of the way. The key to achieving this is great training - comprehensive but tailored to your own requirements. Training starts with short, accessible courses but in time some Panel members may go on to achieve a CIH Level 3 Award in Resident Scrutiny – a new qualification specially designed with tenant scrutiny panels in mind and a useful addition to your CV.

This may be a challenging role at times but if you think of what you might achieve you should find your involvement with the Panel both enjoyable and rewarding.

Recruitment to the Panel is currently closed while we select and train the first members but you can apply to join later in the year.
