Built by their own fair hands

Family Mosaic nears completion of 'sweat equity' scheme in Clapton

Family Mosaic is nearing completion of 7 new flats built as part of a new and innovative scheme designed to help people build their way onto the property ladder.Self-build

The scheme, termed 'Sweat Equity', offers those on the local council housing list the option of buying a stake in a property in return for helping to build it. First time buyers selected for the project are expected to work for up to 23 hours per week and, in return, will own up to 25% of the property - the other share being retained by Family Mosaic but still available to the buyer should they wish to increase their stake.

While building part of your own home may seem a daunting prospect for some, those involved in the project so far have been given full training to gain the skills needed to help build the properties, including tutoring in carpentry, plumbing and decorating, and have remarked on the real sense of satisfaction gained from being involved, enhancing their self-confidence and, most importantly, getting their feet firmly on the property ladder - an accomplishment they admit would have been virtually unachievable in London otherwise.

'Self-builder' Charoltte Rowles, said: "It's a very big deal for me, it's the first place I've ever owned...It feels an amazing thing, there's a real satisfaction to have seen how your home was built and to know you were part of it is amazing."
