Haringey residents transform gardens with Greening Communities
Residents at Bramble Close, Haringey, have given their outdoor space a much needed makeover, as part of the Greening Communities initiative.
After much consultation and discussion over what to do with the area, residents, led by Social Inclusion Officer Angus Kerr got to work to turn long made plans into reality.
Residents of all ages have been working alongside volunteers from the Community Service Volunteers, taking part in the project in a variety of ways. For the creative among them, there was the opportunity to put forward design ideas and take part in a workshop produce a mosaic to reflect their local area.
Others took part in clearing and planting days where trees, bulbs and shrubs were planted. Those wishing for a more strenuous workout wielded sledgehammers to knock down the unwanted wall.
Driving through positive change
Bramble Close sets a record for resident engagement with 67% of residents taking part.
In the past, this external shared space has drawn intimidating behaviour from groups of youths and alcohol and drugs misuse, however the new project has brought the community together to address ASB and drive through positive change.
In a short space of time significant progress has already been made, and there are further plans this year to develop a childrens' play area, BBQ area and communal seating area, as always driven by residents.
